I shot this Blue Tiger butterfly in Mumbai, India, in mid September this year. Unfortunately, it is a battered specimen with badly damaged wings – apparently the lucky survivor of a predator’s attack.

The Blue Tiger (Tirumala limniace) is a butterfly found in India that belongs to the Crows and Tigers, that is, the Danaid group of the Brush-footed butterflies family. This butterfly shows gregarious migratory behaviour in southern India.

(From Bingham, C. T. (1905) Fauna of British India. Butterflies Vol. 1)

Upperside black with bluish-white semi-hyaline spots and streaks. Fore wing: interspace 1 two streaks, sometimes coalescent, with a spot beyond cell: a streak from base and an outwardly indented spot at its apex; a large oval spot at base of interspace 2, another at base of interspace 3, with a smaller spot beyond it towards termen; five obliquely placed preapical streaks, and somewhat irregular subterminal and terminal series of spots, the latter the smaller. Hind wing: interspaces 16, 1 a, and 1 with streaks from base, double in the latter two, cell with a forked broad streak, the lower branch with a hook, or spur-like slender loop, at base of 4 and 5 a broad elongate streak, and at base of 6 a quadrate spot; beyond these again a number of scattered unequal subterminal and terminal spots. Underside: basal two-thirds of fore wing dusky black, the apex and hind wing olive-brown; the spots and streaks much as on the upperside, Antennae, head and thorax black, the latter two spotted and streaked with white; abdomen dusky above, ochraceous spotted with white beneath. Male secondary sex-mark in form 1.

• Wing Expanse: 98-106 mm
• Habitat: Throughout India and extending into South East Asia and China.
• Larva: Yellowish white; 3rd and 12th segments, each with a pair of fleshy filaments, black and greenish white; each of the segments with four transverse black bars, the second bar on all broader than the others, bifurcated laterally, a yellow longitudinal line on each side; head, feet and claspers spotted with black.
• Pupa: "Green with golden scattered spots and beaded dorsal crescent" (Moore),
• Food-plants: Asclepias and Calotropis. Caterpillars feed on the thick fleshy leaves of Soya.

Hello Ram,
This is potentially a fine shot with good POV and sharpness, but it's a pity this specimen is so worn.

Hello Ram,

What a colorful picture you are offering us today! The pov is perfect to see the whole wings of the buttefly. Great dof and you managed the exposure perfectly in order to not burn the white. All those green are lovely too! We can see that this butterfly is a veteran by the damaged wings :-)

Great shot and TFS,

Hola Ram.- Bella Mariposa, aun cuando sus alas estan un poco dańadas no le quita su espectacularidad. Muy agradables colores en el fondo.

Hello Ram,
Nice shot with good detail, DOF, and POV of those "slightly used" wings :) A pleasing frame with nice color. I might've turned down the green just slightly..
Well done mf.

This butterfly has beautiful patterns and colors.
That blue is just gorgeous.
The light is a bit harsh on here, and the green seems very bright on my monitor.
I have done a workshop to see if I can tone them down a bit.
Hope you like it.
TFS. : )

Lovely colours in this shot Ram. The butterfly looks a little worse for ware. Good low POV and crisp, clear, sharp details. TFS.

Hello Ram,
Well framed butterfly!
The state of the wings tells about end of season...
Macro work well done, subject captured with great natural colours and fine sharp details!

Hi Ram

Great shot, I always like to see shots of Butterlies with battered wings as they are still beautful, great composition with nice sharp detail and I do love the vivid colours.

Un osado POV con buen resultado Ram... una bonita composición con intensos colores (tal vez existe un muy ligera sobre exposición) muy buen DOF y foco.
Gracias y saludos... Ricardo

A fearless POV with good result Ram... a nice composition with intense colors (perhaps exists a very slight over exposed), very good DOF and focus.
Thank you and greetings... Ricardo

Hi Ram,
Great capture here. It's sad to see that the wings have been so badly damaged. Indeed he's lucky to be alive but one must wonder how long he can survive in such a state.
Good contrast and colours here. Nice DOF and sharpness. Well done!
