A Hoverfly

First, I think this is a wasp, but this is actually a hoverfly. I would like to thank Greg for his correction on ID. [I had check on pictures of some hoverfly and I convinced that this is a hoverfly, especially based on the two wings and head shape]

This are my quote on hoverfly from Wikipedia:

Flies in the Diptera family Syrphidae are commonly known as hoverflies, flower flies, or Syrphid flies.

As their common names suggest, they are often seen hovering or nectaring at flowers; the adults feed mainly on nectar and pollen, while the larvae (maggots) eat a wide range of foods. In some species, the larvae are saprotrophs, eating decaying plant and animal matter in the soil or in ponds and streams. In other species, the larvae are insectivores and prey on aphids, thrips, and other plant-sucking insects. Aphids alone cause tens of millions of dollars of damage to crops worldwide every year, and so aphid-feeding hover-flies are being recognised as important natural enemies of pests, and potential agents for use in biological control. Adult syrphid flies are important pollinators.

Many Syrphids mimic bees or wasps in appearance. It is thought that this mimicry protects hover flies from falling prey to birds and other insectivores which avoid eating true wasps because of their sting. However a flower fly and a wasp can be distinguished by counting the wings. The flies have two wings, and the wasps and bees have four. Or simply looking at the head, if it looks like a flies head then its likely to be harmless- if not then its best not to risk it. Hover flies get their name from their characteristic flight pattern of hovering nearly still, then darting a short distance very rapidly only to start hovering again, a pattern not seen in the wasps and bees they mimic.

About 6,000 species in 200 genera have been described.

Hello Ben!

Very nice macro, but it isn't wasp - it is hoverfly. Good details and I love shallow DOF with completely blurred BG. Good work!

Hi Ben,
Very sharp with nice clean BG. It would do well with a little bit more DOF (not much, maybe at f/8) to put the antennae in focus as well.
I agree with Grzegorz. This is a hoverfly/flowerfly of the fam. Syrphidae. You can see the 'halteres' or vestigial wings very clearly in this shot (the two white 'droplets' just behind the wings.

Hello Benyamin,
I like your note very much. The body color of a wasp is supposed to yellow with light color stripes and dark colored eyes. This one is different with blue color. I believe this is hoverfly. Very well done picture and TFS.

Hello Ben,
This is a fine capture of a hoverfly (species unknown to me) presented in an interesting way.
Firstly it is interesting that the shallow DOF yields a sharp tip of body and thorax only. Secondly the purple sheen is unusual. Did you use flash? Flash sometimes has this effect. If not then this colour makes the fly even more interesting.

Framing is superb.

This is, apparently, a mid-flight capture, Ben.
In that respect, it is a masterpiece of sorts at 1/360!
Brilliant focus, colours and sharpness.
