I still have a few interesting photos from Iceland and start with this Golden Plover.

The European Golden Plover (Pluvialis apricaria), also known as the Eurasian Golden Plover or just the Golden Plover within Europe, is a largish plover. This species is similar to two other golden plovers. American Golden Plover, Pluvialis dominiica, and Pacific Golden Plover, Pluvialis fulva, are both smaller, slimmer and relatively longer-legged than European Golden Plover, and both have grey rather than white axillary feathers (only properly visible in flight).

A medium-sized plover with a distinctive gold and black summer plumage. In winter the black in replaced by buff and white. They typically stand upright and run in short bursts. Very wary on the breeding grounds. In winter they form large flocks which fly in fairly tight formation with rapid, twinkling wingbeats.

Eats worms and beetles.

Protection
The European Golden Plover is one of the species to which the Agreement on the Conservation of African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbirds (AEWA) applies.

Origin to the Guinness Worlds Records
On 10 November 1951, Sir Hugh Beaver, then the managing director of the Guinness Breweries, went on a shooting party in the North Slob, by the River Slaney in County Wexford, Ireland. After missing a shot at a Eurasian Golden Plover, he became involved in an argument over which was the fastest game bird in Europe, the golden plover or the red grouse (the former being correct). That evening at Castlebridge House, he realised that it was impossible to confirm in reference books whether or not the golden plover was Europe's fastest game bird. Beaver knew that there must be numerous other questions debated nightly in pubs throughout Ireland, but there was no book in the world with which to settle arguments about records. He realised then that a book supplying the answers to this sort of question might prove popular. Later, he published the first Guinness World Records.

Peter,
What an IMPRESSIVE image of the Plover.
Your composition has "brought out" the beauty in its plumage.
Quite an education ... specially on how and who "discovered" and constructed the Guinness World Records book.
Greetings from Canada,
Mario.

This is the most beautiful Plover I have ever seen, Peter.
You have done full justice to its beauty by capturing it in such a way that we have a complete view of its plumage and the fascinating patterns and colours on it.
Thanks for taking out a gem hidden in you archives and sharing it with us.

Hello Peter - Really beautiful bird this "Golden plover". Excellent composition using the grass blade and a stone left side of the frame. Lower POV with such splendid BG made it attractive. Thanks for sharing. Regards - Srikumar

Hello Peter,
Just beautiful in your usual high quality. I think the colours are different from those of the plovers that we are used to here. Very interesting note as well. A real pleasure to view.

Hi Peter,
Beautiful shot,I believe that in Iceland is beautiful and preserved nature.
Nice colours good composition and sharpness details with excellent background.
Regards Jiri.

Hi Peter,
Nice capture of the golden prover. Although sharpness on the plumage may be improved a little bit in my opinion, the composition's second to none, and the blurred background helps a lot for the viewer to concentrate only to the bird. Natural colors as well, and extra thanks for the Irish story in your note. ;-)
Best regards, László
