Nights still very cold and below zero, but the sun that comes out during the day allows the first outings of Vanessa from hibernation. As usual, even for this year, the first butterfly to be sighted is the Inachis io, I have only seen this one and it seems that he has spent a good winter observing the excellent state of the wings.

Class: Insecta
Order: Lepidoptera
(unranked) Rhopalocera
Superfamily: Papilionoidea
Family: Nymphalidae
Subfamily: Nymphalinae
Tribe: Nymphalini
Genus: Inachis
Species: I. io

The European peacock caterpillar (Inachis io), more commonly known simply as the peacock caterpillar, is a well-known colourful butterfly, found in temperate Europe and Asia. It is the only member of the genus Inachis which is sometimes included in Nymphalis. It should not be confused or classified with the "American peacocks" in the genus Anartia; these are not close relatives of the present species. The peacock butterfly is resident in much of its range, often wintering in buildings or trees. It therefore often appears quite early in spring. The butterfly hibernates over winter before laying its eggs in early spring, in batches of up to 500 at a time. The caterpillars, which are shiny black with six rows of barbed spikes and a series of white dots on each segment, hatch after about a week and feed on nettles and hops.
The adult butterflies drink nectar from a wide variety of flowering plants, including buddleia, sallows, dandelions, wild marjoram, danewort, hemp agrimony, and clover; they also utilize tree sap and rotten fruit. The Peacock can be found in woods, fields, meadows, pastures, parks, and gardens, and from lowlands up to 8,200 feet elevation. It is a relatively common butterfly seen in many European parks and gardens.

Lucky to have an early sighting of this pretty butterfly, Luciano.
The capture on the ground with full wings open looks lovely.

It is patience job that I was always fail, you did this well and never seen such beauty in my life, great.

Bonsoir Luciano,

Pierre

Hi Luciano,
Congratulations for finding (and posting) the first butterfly of the year, I didn't expect it may happen now. In Hungary we have 70 centimetres of snow in the mountains (which is very much there), meanwhile in Ireland there are the usual, rainy, plus 4-5 degrees winter conditions (if we can call it "winter" in the land of eternal spring and autumn). So, I'm really surprised and happy that in Italy butterflies, at least a few, finished their hybernation season. Great photo, not only due to its uniqueness, but also due to the nice composition and the great color contrast between the bright red of the wings and the rather dull background. Lovely shot, bravo!
Kind regards from Ireland, László
