Spitzbergen Whale Bone Feast
|[Noty - Informator] Notatki Autora|
|These polar bears were part of a group of 15 which had gathered on the shores of Phippsoya, a small island in Northern Spitzbergen, to feed on the remains of a dead sperm whale. It is unusual for polar bears to gather in such large numbers it was only the abundance of easy food which enabled it to happen.|
I have not cropped this shot. I have adjusted the levels and sharpened it.
The shot was taken from a zodiac. The polar bears were so engrossed in feeding we were able to approach within a few metres. At one time there were also bears in the water. We were able to watch them for a couple of hours, by which time everyone was becoming very cold. It was an amazing scene. The only downside was that it was very overcast and the beach was composed of grey pebbles, which, with the moving zodiac, meant I had to shoot at a higher speed than I would have liked.

You mentioned difficult conditions but the quality of the pic is very high (even at 320 ISO)
the abundance of easy food is not to be seen on the pic. I guess they have been feeding there for weeks and the food is now over.
Very unic pic. Excellent in all aspects. Interesting to look at.

I think you did excellent given the circumstances. The composition is very good and I'm impressed that this is no crop. Sharpness looks just fine here. Well done.
That's an amazaing shot! Very nice composition and POV. Well done James.
This is a great image, depicting a situation not many will ever come close to!
Impressive to keep the texture in the fur without overexposure, very good details and the DOF is spot on...
Well composed image and impressive work!
