Hello,

I visited last sunday a great forest within the Eastern Township in Quebec (near St-Claude) where I saw for the first time several splendid Grey Jay!

Grey jays are known to be very confident towards humans...

It is not easy for me and my bridge to take birds in flight. This is why I had to develop some tricks to do so...

Here I need a light camera, an arm enough long ;-), a well positionned sun, a focus done on my fingers, the smallest aperture (f8.0 for my Panasonic), a quick shutter speed (1/1000s), a light under-exposure, a threat (removed with the post-process), a very cooperative gray jay and a lot of chance!

We shake all those ingredients and we wait! One eye on the camera and the other one looking at the bird perched on the pine. When this one takes its flight, we begin to press the button and pray...

Here is the result: a full framed picture :-)

Hoping you like it :-)

Michel

============================

The Gray Jay stores large quantities of food for later use. It uses sticky saliva to glue small food items to tree branches above the height of the eventual snow line. It may be this food storage behavior that allows the jay to live so far north throughout the winter.

Salut Michel,

Claudine

Hi Michel
an outstanding shot! All your careful hard work and preperation has really paid off here. I used to have the FZ-20, it is a great camera and you have used it here to it's full capabilites.
Excellent exposure and sharp detail, the slight blur in the wings adds a touch of movement and i really like your POV too.
Thanks for a great note explaining your method of getting this too, well done!

Hi Michel

Yes...confidence is really the key sometimes!
In this case it landeed you with a splendid and unique shot of this lovely gray jay!
You did great to take the chance and hold out your hand in order to lure the bird and shoot with the other. The bird did good to be confident enough to come and get the bait and give you this terrific pose.
Very good camera management and focusing.
Nice work!

Bravo and TFS
Horia

Hi Michel,
Cool! :) I like this very much, because it shows man interacting with nature in a very postive way. The bird is captured in excellent fashion, with it's open wings AND man's out-stretched hand in symbolic imagery.

Reminds of Robert Downings words.."A man's reach should exceed his grasp, else what's heaven for".
Very well done,
Howard
