This is a Painted Grasshopper (Poekilocerusictus)one of the most beautiful grasshoppers in our part of the world. Here it is seen siting and chewing the leaf of its favourite host plant Rubber Bush known locally as Aak (Calotropis procera) which in turn is a fine medicinal plant of our region and is a kind of milkweed known as Sodom Apple or Giant Milkweed in English. This grasshopper thrives on these rubber bush plants and lays them waste for their survival but neither the plant gets annihilated nor do the grasshoppers and the cycles of nature go on interrupted perhaps threatened only by man. This rubber bush plant is host to more than two hundred species of insects, birds and animals collectively....mostly insects.

The rest of the information I have borrowed from Whatsthatbug.com:

“Poekilocerus pictus belonging to Family Pyrogomorphinae (known for cryptic as well as bright colours hence called Gaudy Grasshoppers are also known for “Spear” shaped heads) is commonly known as Ak Grasshopper (and one of the many Painted Grasshoppers), and is one of the most colorful grasshoppers of India and Pakistan. The nymphs display spots of varied colours from yellow, orange to blue and green. The adults show yellow and blue striped on head and thorax, a bright red abdomen, green-yellow forewings and red hind wings which are seen only in flight. The adults grow to about 60mm and are capable of good flight.
The adults are generally seen post-monsoon and, if conditions are favorable, they swarm. The food plant for this is Calotropis sp., especially C. procera, however it is known to attack many crops (including C. gigantea – Giant Milkweed). The color in nymphs as well as adults is bright and warning and is explained due to the presence of toxic alkaloids present in Calotropis they feed on.
The eggs are laid in “pods” (each pod contains 70 – 200 eggs) during the monsoon months June to August, and the nymphs hatch around September. The nymphs are usually seen near Calotropis plants, and by October the adults are seen specifically on the food plant. I have no records of finding it in the months after monsoon, however literature says that eggs laid in the month of September to November that hatch in April – May, here the incubation period is longer than during monsoon months due to, perhaps, climatic conditions.
According to literature, the adults are also known to turn cannibalistic even in the presence of ample food – for reasons unknown!”

Hello Syed,
We have seen from time to time grasshoppers of this family on this site. And I have to say that every time I'm astonished to see the wonderful colors of this Painted Grasshopper. But they don't seem to be very friendly to their conspecifics!
Thanks also for your interesting note.
Kind regards

Hallo Abid
Very pleasant composition you used in this image, it works well, just as well as the prominent yellow and teal colours of the hopper. What a beauty and how well did you capture it to show all the beautiful details and features to its best. I especially like the shiny big eye and the striped antennas. Not only are its colours exquisite but all of the patterns are amazing. The sunlight in the image works wonders with the colours. It is very pleasing to the eye, and I very much enjoyed looking at this lovely sharp image that is presented in a delightful manner. Thanks for sharing. Kind regards and have a lovely day.
