Yes this does look like a scene from a horror film: one monster engulfing another!
I've no idea what the ID is but it is a fine capture of both the slime fungus and the one below it. Perhaps our friend László can help on this one.
Thanks and have a good week in your warm country!:))

Greg, this sure is a very curious bit of Fungus and your thought assiciation of it with a human brain fits.
I'm no fungus expert, so all I have to say is that this is very realistic capture verging on three dimensional.
Thanks and regards.

Hi Grzegorz. You are right about the first sentence in your notes. It also looks like the brain removed from the skull. The capture is brilliant with details so well defined. Great find and thanks for sharing. Jusni

Good to see a post from you and a very interesting one too! As regards the shape I agree with Laurens but the white colour is odd!
An excellent capture, very sharp and the colours in this composition are beautiful. I wouldn't eat it though!!
TFS and best wishes, Ulla
The upper bunch of fungi is a parasitic species named Syzygospora tumefaciens (Ginns & Sunhede) Ginns, which is infecting mostly the fruitbodies of Collybia genera sensu lato. Hard to identify the infected fruitbody though, probably Rhodocollybia maculata (Alb. & Schwein.) Singer. Excellent shot and post, Dr. Watson. :)
Friendly regards, Wladek
