I have at last succeeded in photographing Brown Rock Chat or Indian Chat (Cercomela fusca) which is a regular visitor to my home. The pair has once or twice nested here as well. They come to feed in our backyard where my wife leaves stale bread, crumbs of fresh bread and discarded slices etc which are time and again either eaten or pilfered by crows, common mynahs and are pillaged by mongooses and these brown rock chats. Here the bird is seen with dry crumbs of bread in front of it. These are innocent and lovely birds and sing beautifully in soft treble tones.
There is a thriving population of Brown Rock Chats here in Dera Ismail Khan, the city, where I live. Here they have broken the concept/myth that they live in old or ruined buildings. I have found them in built-in areas and amidst humans in all the rattle and hum of daily life and have become used to humans.
Here is the rest:
The Brown Rock Chat or Indian Chat (Cercomela fusca) is a bird in the chat (Saxicolinae) subfamily and is found mainly in northern and central India and only extends slightly into northeastern Pakistan. It is often found on old buildings and rocky areas. It resembles a female Indian Robin but lacks the reddish vent and differs in posture and behaviour apart from being larger. In flight it bears some resemblance to thrushes and redstarts. It feeds on insects, captured mainly on the ground. The sexes are indistinguishable in the field. When feeding on the ground it sometimes flicks open its wings and tail. It also has a habit of slowly raising its tail slightly, fanning it and bobbing its head. They feed mainly on insects, picked off the ground. They have been known to feed late and forage on insects attracted to artificial lighting.
