Seeing that there is a lack or aurora photos here on TN and that the response on my previously posted aurora photo was very good, I will post another one in a different setting.

This photo shows northern lights as seen from the Námaskarđ geothermal area near Krafla in North Iceland. The volcanically active area has numerous fumaroles and boiling mud pools. At the time when the photo was taken there was no wind and it was almost full moon. Going out there I was only expecting to make beautiful night-time photos of the fumaroles using long exposures and letting the full moon light up the area, but just before getting back into the car a very intense display of green to purple northern lights started up very suddenly, and large parts of the sky bursted into colorful and fast flickering flames. After shooting a few photos straight up I ran back to the fumaroles where I managed to capture a few photos like the one above before the aurora faded out completely.

Hello Fredrik,

Another amazing shot of an amazing phenomenon. It's a fantastic perfectly exposed image with great DOF. I don't understand the white specks on both of your last 2 posts.

I would venture that witnessing both of these natural phenomena simultaneously is a very special privilege, so thank you, Fredrik, for sharing this amazing scene with us. The details are amazingly sharp and the light and colors are amazing overall. TFS. : )

Hello Fredrik,

this is a very impressing night time photo of a rare phenomenon taken in a landscape of silent great beauty.

Taking long exposure pictures at moonlight inevitably deliver results that look quite unusual to the spectator in their colourful sunlight and daytime appeance - as the human eye unusally does not record any reflected colours of landscape at moonlight, whereas the intensity of aurora boralis will be very colourful for sure due to its sufficient brightness to activate the colour sensitive cells of the retina. Evelynn's question demonstrates the difficulty to accept the picture of being nightime at all when asking about the nature of "white specks" - very obviously the stars of nighttime sky.

I have tried a workshop just to imitate an impression that might be more realistic to the human perception of the moment - a guess only, of course, as I never have seen what you have seen. Please tell me if it comes any close to the experience you had.

Very interesting and appealing contribution you have made. Thank you! Best regards,

Peter

Hi Fredrik,
Another amazing photo. I actually agree with Peter and like his WS. As he mentioned nobody knows what it realy looked like but you. Good question from Evelynn on the white spots. Are they stars? To nit pick a little, I would have loved to see the top of the geyser.
TFS,
Niek

I don't know what to say. Its so un-Earth like. An incredible shot, I've never seen anything like this before.
You live in an amazing place, thanks.

Wonderful - the photo and the geyser, excellent. I love the detail in your pictures of the aurora and the stars are excellent. I personally thought they were obviously stars having guessed at a night time shot. The WS makes it more obvious that its dark.

When I look at this awesome picture, I feel as though I were on another planet, this shot is breathtakingly fantastic! It looks like were turning Mars into a class M planet releasing oxygen into the atmosphere(compares to the movie Total Recall with Arnold Schwarzenegger). I would actually like to see this in person, with my luck I would probably be standing over one of those holes, just as it is about to blow. Well done Fredrik. :)

Hi Fredrik, this is a great shot really. I like all. POV DOP colours and details.
Congratulations.
Maurizio

Simply impressive! Your long exposure time here just makes wonders. I am suprised on how a full moon can bring out colors like that ??? Amazing! And the timing is almost once of a lifetime experience.

Hi Fredrik

Stunning! Yes, I wish I get to see something like this in my lifetime. Even the landscape looks amazing. So this picture was taken at daytime? Its surprising that the sky lit up so much if it was during the day! Anyway, thanks very much for sharing this awesome phenomenon.

Cheers
