Here's a short story about spotting Polar bears on Svalbard (or Spitsbergen):
Unlike other places in the Arctic it can be quite difficult (but also sometimes real easy) to find Polar bears on Svalbard. I guided tours on a sailing vessel for weeks in a row and most of the times I had to be on deck all day with binoculars to whatch for small white spots in the distance. They are more yellow than the snow and that is maybe the best feature to find them. They often lie motionless on rocks or shores. Although I have images closer taken of Polar bears, I like this image, beacause it shows very well the circumstances under which you can find polar bears. Once you found them you have to approach them real, real slow. This one was quite curious to our boat and paid full attention.

Hello Jacob,
It's quite unusual to see a Polar Bear pictured in a rocky area like this with no snow or ice! Interesting shot!

Groetjes,
Paul

Hi Jacob,

I think you've made a good choice by showing us the environment because we sometimes skip surroundings of a creature and needlessly focus on the details so much.Good choice & good photo.

Well done & TFS.

Hoi Jacob,
In ieder geval goed gezien,
Groet, Ruud

Hello Jacob,
Yes, I like this image too. I agree with your not about the circumstances and the contrast of the white bear with the background is excellent. You also show the affects of Global Warming!
TFS, regards, Ivan

With most animals I like nice close shots. But for a polar bear, this is close enough! I really appreciate the context here, too -- the rocks and such of the environment. Great capture in the wild. Thanks for bringing me along on your boat trip, too!

Wow. This is very rare species for TN. I like the composition, contrast of rocks and bear.
TFS Jacob.

Hi Jacob,
I really like your composition on this shot. By not zooming in, you have really shown the dramatic rock landscape to its fullest. Colors and detail look excellent. Very well done here.

I simply have no idea how i could have missed this!
I was just browsing thrugh your gallery and i couldn't belive my eye - a wild polarbear! WOW!
It's also great to show his surroundings (great idea here) not just a simple portrait (like the ones from zoos), to give a better perspective os the wilderness of the place.
Excellent job!

Bravo and TFS

Hoi Jacob,
Groeten,
Niek

I tootally agree with you: "I like this image, beacause it shows very well the circumstances under which you can find polar bears."
