Where are the good old days where the sun was shining and no rain was falling. Yup, I am digging in my archive again.

This was taken at the marsh area called Haaksbergerveen, the place my dad an I are planning to visit throughout an entire year. This was actually a day that I first tried fungi photography.

I am not going to write about this fungi, since there it has been done many times before. Just click on the link to the theme and open one of the photos and you can read all about it. Instead I have found some information about its use in mythology and religion.

Koryak Siberians have a story about the fly agaric (wapaq) which enabled Big Raven to carry a whale to its home. In the story, the deity Vahiyinin ("Existence") spat onto earth, and his spittle became the wapaq, and his saliva becomes the warts. After experiencing the power of the wapaq, Raven was so exhilarated that he told it to grow forever on earth so his children, the people, can learn from it.

Finno-Ugric peoples have traditionally used Amanita muscaria as entheogen.

Amanita muscaria is widely thought to be the Soma talked about in Rig Veda of India, and is less often also thought to be the amrita talked about in Buddhist scriptures.

John Marco Allegro argues in The Sacred Mushroom and the Cross that the Christian religion is derived from a sex and psychedelic mushroom cult.

Ethnobotanist and ethnomycologist Giorgio Samorini suggests in his book "Animals and Psychedelics" a symbiotic relationship between toads, flies and fly agaric. Flies, after a lick of Amanita Muscaria become inebriated and delirious prey for hungry toads that may have learned this, therefore hanging out around toadstools. This relationship within nature illuminates an etymological keystone and example of zoopharmacognosy. This would also provide further biosemiotic insight into the ancient mystery of toads, flies and mushrooms appearing together in popular mythology and fairy lore.

In a 2005 interview with Steven Scott, authors Hawk and Venus discuss Amanita muscaria as their daily sacrament. They claim that shamanic preparation and use of the mushroom results in higher levels of consciousness.

The British writer Robert Graves theorizes in a preface to his book, The Greek Myths, that the Dionysian saturnalias were conducted under the influence of this mushroom

Was this handheld at 1/25 second? There is good sharpness...I don't think your lens is stabilized is it?
I really like your composition here Niek. It is nicely balanced in colors, tones and the asymmetry of shapes. I can just visualize you lying down getting this shot! I guess you were able to brace the camera on the ground?? Nice work.

Hola Niek, bonita imagen de las setas, colores muy bonitos y buen encuadre. Salduos Sira

Hi Niek,

The classic mushroom picture! When I think of a mushroom, the first ones I imagine is these red and white. Nice close-up of this pair with good details, exposure and contrast. The leafs and peat-moss really adds to the composition. TFS.

PC :)

Hi Niek

Diving into the shoebox again. I don’t mind because this archived ‘relic’ is a fine shot.

The composition is great, but I really think that you nailed the lighting pretty well. The colours are rich, the details are sharp, and the BG (although not completely OOF) compliments the toad stools very well.

Good work and TFS.

PS. Sorry for the short critique, but I’m having problems again with the cellulites and cannot sit at the PC for long.

Hello Niek,
A pleasant composition and a nice taste of summer! Or maybe I rather shouldn't eat...
Goiod light, fine colours and pleasant details!

Hi Niek.
Excellent close-up of these amazing mushrooms. Their beauty is reflected perfectly. Superb natural colours, great sharpness and details. The ground and leaves of it decorate the shot nicely. Light BG highlights the main subject very well. Nice artistic work, My best regards and TFS.

Hi Niek

This is a very beautiful post and a fantastic note! It toally captured me! Definately much better than a scientific note about it again! ;)
The picture itself is gorgeous, especially for a first-time fungi shooter :)
The low POV is very nice and works excellently, the colors are charming and the DOF used here is exceptional.
The nice contrast between the mushrooms and pretty much everything else is also very good and the composition is lovely.
Very well done, my friend!

Bravo and TFS

Hallo Niek,

Hi Niek,
The anwser to your question is: Here, where I live! And my question is: Where are the good old days where the sun was hidden and rain was falling?
Lovely composition, beautiful soft light and a pretty mushroom.

Hooi Niek,

Hello Niek,
you found a very nice pair of this specimen, as beautiful they are they also dangerous. The close up is very well composed. Love the placing of your main subjects, lovely view of the enviroment they grow in. The POV, colors and the details are very good.

We have those shrooms out here in Canada too eh. Good job on getting some great detail on these fine specimens.

Beautiful subject and well captured, Niek. Good lighting and DoF works well. I'm jealous.

Nice picture..

Super contrast and focus..

I like the sharpness..and the frame too

BEst regards

Hi Niek,
I found Your photo while fulfilling the "Fly Agaric" theme. Composition- and sharpness-wise an exceptional one, DOF and background's also great. Everything's nice for me - except for the color balance. By my opinion the colors are a bit strange, having more red and magenta than the optimal - that's why I made my WS version.
Otherwise everything's great on the pic, the note's useful, so I give my 2 points. Tfs and have a nice Sunday.
Best regards from Hungary, László
