| 1.4x teleconvertor or any other options... | oanaotilia

Hy everybody
I am spearing some money – not too much and I was thinking to enlarge my zoom level with a 1.4x teleconvertor. I have a Canon 70-300 mm F:4-5,6 Mk III, actually not an extraordinary lens. I am thinking to shoot water birds, that are quite abundant in the autumn-spring here.
I read some reviews, but almost all were tested on other kind of lenses (read, between the expensive ones like “L”series) and very few on the similar version - but with IS. In the reviews they were saying that adding a teleconvertor on such lens is not a big deal.
I am wondering if somebody has another opinion or maybe another suggestion.

Hi Oana,
an extender/converter on a zoom lens will decrease the sharpness a lot,
you will have to step down at least 2 steps.
And the auto focus will not work, you need have a prof Canon 1d.
if you do the tape-trick you can get auto focus but the focus will hunt very much.
Tape-trick here
Best Regards

Hi Oana
I have a 300 mm Canon 2.8 non IS which I use with the 1.4 converter with just perfect results, using it on my 100-400 Canon zoom gives very poor results.
maybe you should spend your money on a professional L-lens, there are some very good deals on older non IS second hand lenses (my 300 mm 2.8 has now more than 15 years and it is still a great lens)

Zoom lenses don't often work with converters both in terms of autofocus and a large reduction in quality. The only zoom lenses that I've heard work well with converters are the Sigma 120-300mm f/2.8, Canon EF 100-400mm and Canon 70-200mm f/2.8. Other than them, I'd reserve converters for prime lenses because you would lose too much quality when using one with a lens such as the 70-300mm.
If you want to get better bird shots, it might be worth investing in a hide which will allow you to get much closer to the birds and would be far better than using a converter.
One other option is maybe buying a new lens altogether. There are lots of 500mm f/8 lenses on second-hand websites and ebay which will cost as much as a converter and maybe even less. They are sharp, light and very portable compared to 500mm f/4 and in good light will result in excellent photos. I don't think they have autofocus so for birds in flight it would be quite hard to use but then your 70-300mm would be perfect for that.
If you'd like any links to reviews or to people selling 500mm f/8 lenses then just say and I'll try and find some for you.
All the best,
Joe |

Hy
Thanks Gert for the trick, could be useful. But I am not decided yet to buy or not the TC.
Also thanks to Joe for the opinion. Yes, I would like to have enough money for Canon EF 100-400, but, I cannot afford it. Maybe If I would find it at second hand and at half of the price from the shops. But about the price, I have doubts. “F:2.8” are too expensive for me, I know that are faster and better for bird photography, but I would have to limit to my budget.
So, I am still thinking and spearing money.
